My projects aims at elaborating the concept of "Caesarism" in regard to its origin, its usage and its current relevance. "Caesarism" refers normally to a form of political rule with an authoritarian Leader who governs with a high degree of consent from large parts of the public. The term originated in the 19th Century to characterize bonapartistic rule in France and has been a key term for political thinkers in the 20th Century such as Max Weber and Antonio Gramsci. My project aims on one hand to define and specify the term and on the other hand to operationalize it in order to gain a clearer understanding of current trends towards populism and "authoritarian" or "illiberal" forms democracy
