After only recently having published my second novel I will be focusing on my next book during my stay. A novel concerning young people traveling in Europe and the US during the time of the current crisis. As a part of this project I want to investigate how modern Italian popular culture is related to the past in the form of both the antique and catholic heritage and aesthetics, as it is seen in museums and in urban spaces in general. The Italian movie director Paolo Sorrentino is quoted as saying that in Rome the raw vulgar and prosaic is living side by side with the exalted, mysterious and beautiful. It is among other things this contrast I want to be inspired by, because I regard it as a dichotomy found several places in modern Western culture. I am interested in decay, decadence, and melancholy. While visiting museums and experiencing everyday life in the city I will be exploring the relationship between the past and the present.
