major on south side (i999) [11] extra---see notesNotes: (vol 1, plate 77) S face. Portrait in a circle, presumably of the deceased. Below this is a square containing a figure of a woman, seated on a rock, with two children leaning against her. She has her arms outspread and appears to be protecting the children in her cloak. One child is holding a downward pointing torch, the other a poppy. In a hole in the rock are four male masks. Relief with woman protecting the two brothers Sleep and Death. Death (left) is represented with a downpointing torch. Sleep, to the right, has a poppy. It refers to morphine, derived from this plant, a fact known to the Greeks and many others. In the bottom of the relief there are faces in a cave.

minor on south side (i999) [11] extra---see notesNotes: Classical scene of departure for Hades. An angel (female) is standing to the right of (behind) a seated male figure (presumably the deceased). She holds him by the elbow with her right hand and in her left raised hand she holds an hourglass. She has her hair braided in the back of her head and wears loose hanging drapery / chiton-style. The seated male figure has his draped legs turned sideways to the left of the relief and his nude torso turned almost full front, while looking back at the angel. In his lap is an upright standing lyre, which he supports with his right hand and in his left hand, which hangs down by his side he holds a wreath. At the foot of his seat, below his left hand is a cornucopia and another wreath. All in relief on the S face.
